Fostering a sense of community is tricky no matter whether you’re a downtown district or a company of professionals. There are so many agendas to consider and perspectives to navigate–it’s easy to forget what the goal was in the first place. Since joining Gravitate 7 months ago, I’ve witnessed how they form their “company community”, and it seems they pull from a bottomless well of respect and love for their employees in everything they do. I wanted to bring a blood drive to Vancouver’s downtown, hosted by Gravitate’s office, for two reasons: because Gravitate showed me how to put people first before work, and because I wanted to share with Vancouver what “creating community” looks like to us.

To put people first can look like a lot of things, and everyone has certain volunteer activities that appeal to them (for their own personal reasons). Blood donations aren’t glamorous or sexy–in fact, most people get the heebie-jeebies just reading about them–but when you or your loved one is on the receiving end of a life-saving liter of blood, you realize how something we all have and create in our bodies daily can make a lifetime of difference for another person.

Megan, our beloved account manager, has hands-down the most compelling testimony for participating in blood drives. After being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia last October, she received several units of donated blood products to help get her through the treatment regime and on the road to recovery. So, the reminder is that you never know when you or a loved one will be unexpectedly diagnosed with a disease that may require a blood transfusion.

According to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds, and the demand is currently higher than the supply. Megan and the Gravitate team urge everyone who is able to donate to register today! It’s simple to sign up and you’re rewarded with knowing you helped someone, possibly a member of your own family. Rack up those karma points!
